This story book castle perched on a rocky island in the Hudson River, north of West Point, was built by the Scottish emigrant Frances Bannerman. Bannerman was the founder of the Army Navy stores in America. He used Bannerman's Island to store war surplus materials after the Spanish American war. In 1969, Frances's daughter donated the island to the state of New York after a mysterious fire destroyed the castle. A ghostly shell is all that remains.
